I didn’t feel like writing an entry about one of the movies I like. Maybe I will be in the mood for that later, but until then, here are a few movies I recommend. Some of you might have seen them, some of you may like them and some of you may hate them.

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006)

We’re in 1958, in New York. Diane Arbus is a frustrated house wife, living a normal life with her husband Allen and their two daughters. They have a successful commercial photography business, sponsored by Diane’s parents, Allen being the photographer.
All her life is about to get thrown into a mysterious swirl of strange events and people when a new neighbor moves into the building. She becomes fascinated with this weird masked man and starts a bizarre relationship with him. In this new world populated by transvestites, dwarves and others living on the fringes of society she finds her passion for photography and after the death of her lover she starts traveling to take fully advantage of her new found passion.

That would be a short description of one of the most interesting movies I’ve seen lately. I didn’t include many details, since I wouldn’t want to spoil the viewing pleasure of those who haven’t watched the movie yet. Diane Arbus is one of my favorite photographers and that’s what made me curious about seeing Fur – and i am glad to admit that i wasn’t at all disappointed. Her work captures the most discrete, disturbing and interesting parts of society and the movie -even if an imaginary story – underlines just that.

Instead of me trying to write a few meaningless words about her life and work, I will let her photographs speak for themselves.

Cat Power

I first heard one of her songs on a shoutcast radio station. It was something new and different from what i had heard before, something that touched me deeply, so I decided to find out more about the artist and her music.

Cat Power is the stage name of American singer/songwriter Charlyn “Chan” Marshall (born Charlyn Marie Marshall on 21 January 1972), who is known for her minimalist style, sparse guitar and piano playing, and breathy vocals. She started performing under the name Cat Power after dropping out of high school, backed by musicians Glen Thrasher, Marc Moore, and others. Her voice can also be heard in several commercials and she in October 2006 she became the celebrity spokesperson for a line of jewelry from Chanel, starting to have some other non musical projects.

My Flowers

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post my photos here. I am not really pleased with them, but I consider them a start towards – hopefully – something better. I just need to materialize my ideas at some point. Until then, flowers it is (at least some of them).

Francesca Woodman

Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photographs of herself and of female models. She was born on April 3rd 1958 in Denver, Colorado in a family of artists. She took an interest in photography from a very early age and was thirteen when her first works were made. She soon adopted black and white photography in a 2 1/4 inch square format, producing around 800 works before her suicide at age 22 in 1981.

Woodman’s subject matter was primarily the body and space and she often used the frame of the photograph as a stage in which bodies could pose, move and perform alongside carefully selected props. The artist’s approach to photography inverted its usual documentary application; instead she used the camera as a way of creating temporary scenes and spaces and bringing about the transformation of objects, surfaces and movement.

I must admit i stumbled upon her works by mistake. Not many things are able to capture my interest, but her photographs left me speechless. The feelings that they give birth to are so complex and they become part of you, they become part of who you are. And the images projected by her works will be imprinted in your life forever.
